What does Australian Certified Organic mean?
Thursday, September 2nd, 2021

This September we are celebrating 9 years since we launched RosehipPLUS in Australia. It is also Australian Certified Organic Awareness Month – so what better reason to celebrate! PLUS save during Organic Awareness Month – details below…

When we launched our RosehipPLUS pure and natural cold-pressed Rosehip Oil into the Australian market in 2012, we were determined to offer the best rosehip oil available, at the best price, the best size, the highest quality and stamped with approval by the Australian Certified Organic (ACO) bud logo. This insured that our customers could have complete trust and confidence in our brand, knowing that they were getting the best of the best on offer. Seven years down the track and we are proud to now be a natural skincare range with all of our products being Australian Certified Organic.

But did you know that the beauty industry is self-regulated?

What companies put on their product labels and how they market the products are not checked by a third party – they can basically say whatever they want! They may use the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ but when you dig deeper into the ingredients list there is often ONLY a small percentage of natural or organic ingredients used. There are regulations on including ingredients lists on labels but there are no checks on what ingredients are used in beauty products. Shockingly, out of approximately 13,000 chemicals used in cosmetics about 10% have been evaluated for safety!!* So, as a consumer, you start to question what really is in the products you use on your skin? How do you know it’s not effecting your health?

The only way that people can be confident about purchasing beauty products that don’t have ingredients in them that may effect your health is buying products that are certified organic and carry labeling such as the ACO bud logo.

So what does being Australian Certified Organic mean?

The ACO is Australia’s largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce. It is a not for profit fully-owned subsidiary of Australia Organic Ltd. which provides certification services to operators from all sectors of the organic industry. Certification ensures compliance with national production standards and allows trace back of all products to their origin. You can read more about them here.

The “bud” logo with companies individual certification number means the product contains 95-100% certified ingredients and complies with the organic farming standard. The smaller bud logo means that the product contains between 70-95% organic ingredients (wit the % being indicated on the logo) and also complies with the organic farming standard.

An organic certification logo protects consumers from misleading claims and is the mark of a genuine organic product, which has been audited all along the production chain to comply with strict organic standards.

An Australian Certified organic product is made using a production process free from pesticides, artificial fertilisers and synthetic chemicals. Only organic ingredients are used wherever they are reasonably available. The non-organic ingredients must not include petrochemicals, synthetic colours/fragrances, parfums, or be made using harsh chemical processes such as hydrogenation and sulfuration, Naturally-mined minerals, clays, chalks, pumice and salts are allowed. All products and their ingredients may not be tested on animals.

Businesses must apply for certification, undertake a number of audits and reviews ongoing to become and remain certified. The bud logo assures consumers that the products have been thoroughly assessed in order to guarantee that they are compliant with the standard requirements.

Certified businesses also pay a fee that goes back into supporting and promoting the organic industry.
